Slow mornings

5 Jan

I love those mornings when time seems to stand still…coffee tastes better, the morning light lingers, everything seems to be slowed to just the right pace. Oh yes, and the coffee cake! This is my new discovery- a gluten free pecan coffee cake made by a bakery that is just around the corner from our house- dangerous!

I didn’t realize til after I took this photo that you can see our happy Buddha smiling down on us while we have our cake and coffee.

Elsa and I had a wonderful skype date yesterday. It was great to catch up on her holiday activities and wish her a happy new year. I love her new digital sketches- now I want one of those pen and touch!

Right now I’m superbusy with an exam in school next week and having started a new job yesterday. One of my best ways to relax and clear my mind though is through baking, don’t know why but there is something soothing in making your own bread. For Christmas I got a food processor for bread making and tonight was the first time I used it. Fresh bread out of the oven must be one of the best smells ever and one of my New Year resolutions for 2012 is to bake more bread myself instead of buying it ready – soo much tastier (and cheaper)!

Here comes my basic bread recipe (that can be varied in eternity with different kinds of flour and seasoning).

You need this:

25 g fresh yeast

5 dl lukewarm water

1 tablespoon oil

2 teaspoons salt

12-13 dl flour

Blend it all well and let it rise for about an hour. Form it into the shape you want and let it rise again for about 30 min. If you make baguettes; bake it in a 250 degrees Celcius warm oven for about 15 minutes.

The best evening tea, with fresh bread and home-made hoummus (I’ll share that recipe another day).

Now it’s back to studying. By the way, I love Brita’s clever skirt in the last post!

on the second day of Christmas…

26 Dec

Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Here are a few photos from my Christmas Eve.

a gift from my mom- she made it!

Christmas Eve was also the 5th night of Chanukah…it was lovely to be able to celebrate both holidays in one evening.

Wishing everyone warmth,

Oranges with Cloves

14 Dec

One of my favorite Christmas decorations is to make oranges with cloves. Both since they smell so lovely and because I think they are beautiful and fun to make. Simply choose good-looking oranges, wrap them with a ribbon (if you want the hanging, they look really good just lying in a bowl too) and decorate them with cloves. It’s easier to get the cloves in if you first make holes with a big needle. And the let you creativity fire away!

I made one that I situated close to some of my clothes in the bedroom, hoping that my dresses will smell as good as the oranges.

I also placed one above the kitchen sink, nice to smell when doing the washing-up.

And I’ve finally come around to decorate some gingerbreads. “God Jul” is Swedish for Merry Christmas.

And Brita, these are for you and J. I hope you have a wonderful honeymoon! Say Hi to the sun from me.

Idag har jag gjort mitt favorit-julpynt: nejlikeapelsiner! Och äntligen dekorerat lite pepparkakor.

Bedroom Peek

6 Dec

I’m taking a break in all the Christmas-updates and continue with the presentation of my home instead, you can see my kitchen here and today we’re going to take a peek into my bedroom.

Tadaa , this is how it looks! I’ve drawn the “bed” myself a couple of months ago. I saw a bed-illustration similar to this one about a year ago in a blog that I’ve unfortunately forgotten the address to and really liked the idea. My apartment lacks space for good storage, which has been partly solved by placing the bed on top of cabinets.

When I made the wall-illustration I started with sketching the lines with the help of a ruler, tape measure and a pencil. I wanted the bed to look as an old, classic brass bed.

When the outlines were finished I filled them in with a permanent black marker.

When I used the permanent marker I skipped the ruler and just followed the pencil-outlines to get a more vivid feel to it.

And this is how the bed looked this morning.

The warmth of family and friends

5 Dec

I’ve just returned home from a fabulous time at my sister’s wedding. The preparations and festivities leading up to the big day were filled to the brim with laughter, love and a lot of elbow grease. It’s a very special feeling when two beautiful and talented families come together with the intention to honor and celebrate love- it is the core of our human experience, the honoring of our larger purpose, the real meat of life.

I don’t have any photos from the big day yet, but the rehearsal dinner the night before was magical in and of itself. With the Smörgåsbord taking center stage and the house as full with friends from near and far (we did have a 2 guests from Malmö!) the evening was one that will be remembered for years to come.

My parents home- i love their style

It’s the time of year when candle light and bonfires transform space into dreamlike vignettes of light, love and laughter.

And the evening would not be complete without seven delicious cookies (including gluten free pepparkakor)! My sister made them using the basic cookie dough recipe found in Rutiga Kokboken for Sju sorters kakor.

Happy second week of Advent!
