Hello Goodbye

10 Jan

It has been a mild winter here in Malmö too. Today I bicycled to school for the first time this year, one of the advantages with a winter without snow is that one still can bicycle everywhere. I haven’t been at the University since before Christmas and it felt quite good to do an exam that I’ve been studying for for quite a while now.

Lisa and Isa bicycling through the park in Alnarp.

My basket and a bell that I’ve bought in India. It has a lovely tinkle.

When I got home from University I felt it was time to say Goodbye to Christmas…

… and Hello to Spring instead!

I absolutely love the crispy feel of tulips. The busty lady you see in the background is a photo of a 60’s Bollywood star that I’ve bought at a vintage-market in Mumbai, India.

Wooded House Gift

28 Dec

I’ve made houses in wood for my youngest niece and nephew. I haven’t met them yet this holiday so if their parents read this – please don’t tell. I got the inspiration from My and Gustaf, who shared table with my friend Ida on this occasion. They had made loads of similar houses to sell as decoration and toys. I really loved the idea and decided to make something alike myself.

Luckily enough I have a person close to me that has a wood workshop that I can use.

Before paint.

I painted the roofs in bright colors (and black and gold).

It was hard to stop when I had started, I really like that you can build your own little towns and the houses were fun to make.

Finished! I found the suitable boxes on Lagerhaus.

Ready to give away, I hope they will like them.

Now I’m gonna bake a cake for my mother, who celebrates her birthday today.

Oranges with Cloves

14 Dec

One of my favorite Christmas decorations is to make oranges with cloves. Both since they smell so lovely and because I think they are beautiful and fun to make. Simply choose good-looking oranges, wrap them with a ribbon (if you want the hanging, they look really good just lying in a bowl too) and decorate them with cloves. It’s easier to get the cloves in if you first make holes with a big needle. And the let you creativity fire away!

I made one that I situated close to some of my clothes in the bedroom, hoping that my dresses will smell as good as the oranges.

I also placed one above the kitchen sink, nice to smell when doing the washing-up.

And I’ve finally come around to decorate some gingerbreads. “God Jul” is Swedish for Merry Christmas.

And Brita, these are for you and J. I hope you have a wonderful honeymoon! Say Hi to the sun from me.

Idag har jag gjort mitt favorit-julpynt: nejlikeapelsiner! Och äntligen dekorerat lite pepparkakor.

Bedroom Peek

6 Dec

I’m taking a break in all the Christmas-updates and continue with the presentation of my home instead, you can see my kitchen here and today we’re going to take a peek into my bedroom.

Tadaa , this is how it looks! I’ve drawn the “bed” myself a couple of months ago. I saw a bed-illustration similar to this one about a year ago in a blog that I’ve unfortunately forgotten the address to and really liked the idea. My apartment lacks space for good storage, which has been partly solved by placing the bed on top of cabinets.

When I made the wall-illustration I started with sketching the lines with the help of a ruler, tape measure and a pencil. I wanted the bed to look as an old, classic brass bed.

When the outlines were finished I filled them in with a permanent black marker.

When I used the permanent marker I skipped the ruler and just followed the pencil-outlines to get a more vivid feel to it.

And this is how the bed looked this morning.

The warmth of family and friends

5 Dec

I’ve just returned home from a fabulous time at my sister’s wedding. The preparations and festivities leading up to the big day were filled to the brim with laughter, love and a lot of elbow grease. It’s a very special feeling when two beautiful and talented families come together with the intention to honor and celebrate love- it is the core of our human experience, the honoring of our larger purpose, the real meat of life.

I don’t have any photos from the big day yet, but the rehearsal dinner the night before was magical in and of itself. With the Smörgåsbord taking center stage and the house as full with friends from near and far (we did have a 2 guests from Malmö!) the evening was one that will be remembered for years to come.

My parents home- i love their style

It’s the time of year when candle light and bonfires transform space into dreamlike vignettes of light, love and laughter.

And the evening would not be complete without seven delicious cookies (including gluten free pepparkakor)! My sister made them using the basic cookie dough recipe found in Rutiga Kokboken for Sju sorters kakor.

Happy second week of Advent!

Hyacinths On My Mind

1 Dec

Today I made more Christmas-flowers, this time for my sister though. White hyacinths are truly my December-favorites and I like them with the calm green background of moss and Ivy, Hedera helix. Or wash away the soil from the roots and put them in a glass filled with stones (they will survive with only the help of water).  Being a gardener I also must call for planting the hyacinths outside when you’re finished with the holiday-celebrations. Simply place the hyacinth in a light window when it has bloomed. When the leaves starts to wither you stop giving the bulb water and place it in a dark, dry and warm place. Then plant it in your garden in May or October (if you do not have a garden of your own – this is a perfect plant for guerilla-gardening…).

Brita, how wonderful with the wedding – give Sarah Rose and Michael the biggest of hugs from me!
